West Ham United: Alan Shearer namechecks Jarrod Bowen in Marcus Rashford Euro 2024 admission
West Ham United winger Jarrod Bowen has been namechecked by Alan Shearer as one player who could miss out on a place in the England squad for Euro 2024.
The 27-year-old was handed a start by Gareth Southgate in the Three Lions’ 2-2 draw with Belgium on Tuesday (26 March) and impressed from the right-wing before he was replaced by Anthony Gordon in the closing exchanges.
Given England’s strength in the wide areas, Shearer expects a couple of wingers to miss out on a place in Southgate’s squad this summer but admits that he believes Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford are the players under pressure.
Writing for The Athletic on Wednesday (27 March) he said: “The problem the wingers have got is that there are so many of them there. Jack Grealish, Jarrod Bowen, Rashford, Gordon, Saka, Gordon, to name just a few, and so at least a couple of good players could miss out.
“Grealish and Rashford are definitely under pressure for their positions. It’s tough but, whoever Gareth picks, he can just point at all the options, whereas defensively he doesn’t have anywhere near as much depth.”
Will West Ham United star Jarrod Bowen go to Euro 2024 with England?
As Shearer suggested, it is hard for any winger in this current England squad to secure a place in Southgate’s squad for this summer’s tournament and Bowen’s situation won’t be any different to the likes of Bukayo Saka and Rashford.
The Hammers winger boosted his chances of making the trip to Germany this summer with his impressive performance against Belgium, but so much could depend on what happens between now and the end of the season.

On form, Bowen certainly deserves his place more than either Rashford or Grealish who have been fairly indifferent for Manchester United and Manchester City respectively but Southgate hasn’t always been known for his fair selections.
If the 27-year-old keeps going from strength to strength between now and the end of the campaign he’ll give Southgate a big decision to make.
Hopefully, he can help the Irons have a successful end to the season first.
