West Ham United agree Kalvin Phillips deal with Manchester City as wages update emerges – David Ornstein
West Ham and Manchester City have now agreed a deal to take Kalvin Phillips to the London Stadium on loan, according to David Ornstein.
The Athletic journalist reported via Twitter on 23 January that the deal is done, with the Hammers covering 100% of the England international’s wages as he flies back to the UK with the City squad.
The 28-year-old is set to join the Irons on loan until the summer having fallen down the pecking order at the Etihad.
And while Juventus are working on a late deal there has been no agreement reached between the Italian giants and City.
Done deal?
It can’t be entirely certain until he has signed and been announced but it looks like the hard yards have been put in to get this one over the line.
The former Leeds United star will clearly be an expensive addition to the wage bill, especially when only Thilo Kehrer has left to make any space so far.
But it looks like David Moyes really wanted this deal done, and despite their apparent differences Tim Steidten has delivered the goods for his manager.
Phillips, if he is ready to play straight away, would provide immediate cover for the injured Edson Alvarez, but who drops out when everyone is fit will become a decision the manager now has to make.
It is an eye-catching deal for the Hammers to get done midseason, with the likes of Newcastle and Barcelona also linked, and may kickstart a slow window.
Moyes still looks like he needs a couple of attacking additions, with lack of options at striker evident so far this season after Gianluca Scamacca left in the summer without a replacement coming in.
If West Ham should be able to conclude one or two more deals, both in and out, it could prove to be a transformative window.
In other West Ham news, if the Hammers sign a priority full-back target this month they will strike a “major blow” to his club.
