West Ham United advance transfer talks as Kalvin Phillips update drops

West Ham are closing in on the signing of Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City on a loan deal, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Italian transfer specialist reported via X [23 January] that the Man City outcast is getting “closer and closer” to a move to London Stadium this January, with a new round of talks set to take place soon.

It is understood that the Hammers are in ongoing discussions with the current Premier League champions about the structure of the deal. West Ham are said to remain positive about the loan signing.

Getting closer

West Ham fans will be delighted to know that their club is closing in on an exciting signing before the end of the January transfer window.

Despite his lack of game time at Etihad Stadium under Pep Guardiola, Phillips still has the potential to be one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, as proven throughout his Leeds United career.

There is a reason Gareth Southgate still trusts the 28-year-old to perform on the individual stage, even without match fitness or match sharpness, amassing 31 caps for England since August 2020.

With the addition of Phillips from Man City, not only will David Moyes have more depth to choose from, but he will also have the ability to create a rock-solid defensive partnership between the ex-Leeds man and Edson Alvarez.

Using these two at the base of West Ham’s midfield would allow the attack to become more free-flowing, with Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paqueta and Mohammed Kudus – once they all return from their various injuries and international duty – needed less to defend.

The signing of Phillips is an exciting one for all parties, with Man City fans wanting the best for him. West Ham and the midfielder seems like the perfect match.
