West Ham United captain Jarrod Bowen impressed the media in his cameo for England on Saturday (7 September), despite missing a "golden opportunity".

The English national press lauded his late substitute appearance at the Aviva Stadium against the Republic of Ireland, helping to see out the Three Lions' 2-0 Nations League opening win.

The Daily Mail's Craig Hope [7 September] gave Bowen a 6/10 after replacing Harry Kane in the 85th minute, declaring that he "always looks lively for England".

Metro's Callum McAvoy [7 September] echoed that, handing Bowen another mark of six after creating himself a "golden opportunity" which was saved by Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Bowen will be hoping to play a significant part against Finland at Wembley on Tuesday.

As is often the frustrating case for a player, if you perform well off the bench, you tend to stay on the bench.

Bowen's performances for West Ham first carved him a place in the England squad back in 2022, and of his 11 caps to date, only five have been starts.

This is understandable when recognising the competition for attacking positions in the Three Lions side, but the 27-year-old is taking his opportunities and always provides a powerful outlet going forward when he is introduced.

The next step for the Hammers talisman will be to score his first international goal, and Tuesday provides ample opportunity should Lee Carsley opt to rotate the side at Wembley.

Saturday was a day when some Irons players did not cover themselves in glory for their national teams - Czechia playing no small part - but Bowen's cameo certainly kept levels high in the England team.
