West Ham United £80m losses revealed as Premier League point deduction threat played down

West Ham United currently face no immediate danger of breaching the Premier League’s financial fair play regulations, according to West Ham Football.

The Twitter account, run by journalist Sean Whetstone, shared on Tuesday (28 November) a breakdown of the Hammers’ spending against the Premier League’s allowed losses, which appear to have left the Irons with a “healthy margin”.

In the Premier League, the fundamental rule is that sides are not allowed to lose more than £105 million over the course of three years, with much attention being paid to the profit and sustainability rules after Everton were deducted 10 points for a £20 million overspend.

Although accounts haven’t been published this season, previous reports show a profit of £12 million in 2021/22, a loss of £27 million in 2020/21 and a £65 million loss in 2019/20. Overall that is a net loss of £80 million with virtue spending able to reduce that fee.

Being £35 million short of that all-important £105 million figure the Premier League monitor, it appears as though West Ham supporters can rest easy that their side aren’t facing a point deduction any time soon.

Can relax

Every Premier League side will surely be checking their accounts following the news of Everton’s point deduction with teams terrified that they too could be facing the threat of a point deduction if their accounts make for bleak reading.

But judging by the report shared by Whetstone, it appears as though West Ham supporters can rest easy in the knowledge that they are safe from such punishment as they are well within the allowed losses of the Premier League.

West Ham

The Hammers accounts this season should hopefully also be positive after the big sale of Declan Rice to Arsenal and a few smaller sales such as Gianluca Scamacca and Nikola Vlasic this summer raised some much-needed funds.

While there remains concern that the Irons may be closer to breaking UEFA’s financial fair play rules, that doesn’t seem to pose an immediate threat instead just limiting what incoming business can be done in January.

Hopefully, West Ham should be able to go through the remainder of the Premier League season without worrying about a potential 10-point deduction pulling them into a relegation battle.
