West Ham to undergo major squad overhaul this summer – report

West Ham United are about to undergo a major squad overhaul this summer, according to the Evening Standard on Friday evening [27 May].

Despite a thin squad, the Hammers had a successful 2021-22 season. They reached the Europa League semi-final and secured the seventh spot in the Premier League for the second season in a row.

To cope with the challenge next season, David Moyes is looking forward to a major squad overhaul in the summer transfer window.

The former Everton and Manchester United manager is said to be “desperate” for both cover and quality competition in every position in the squad.

This indicates fresh blood will be added to the squad ahead of the start of the next season.

Main West Ham targets this summer

With UEFA Conference League triumph in West Ham’s mind, they are looking to add a quality striker to their ranks.

It has been at the top of Moyes’ wish list pretty much from the moment he returned for a second spell at the club in late 2019.

Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard, who will be out of contract this summer, is one of the priorities for the club. The England international has only started two Premier League games during the 2021-22 season after failing to move away from Old Trafford in the summer of 2021 and in January.

The club has held talks over Rennes centre-back Nayef Aguerd while Nottingham Forrest’s Joe Worrall is also on the radar.

A significant signing in the midfield position remains on Moyes’ list of priorities as well following the retirement of Mark Noble and the end of Alex Kral’s unsuccessful loan spell.

Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse has been linked with the Hammers and seems a more realistic target this summer.
