West Ham to run rule over Fenerbahce centre-back Attila Szalai at the Euros

West Ham United want a left-footed defender and will be watching Fenerbahce centre-back Attila Szalai at the Euros.

According to NTV Spor, the Hammers are keen on the Hungarian international and are expected to start official talks if they are convinced of his quality after the tournament.

The Turkish giants are not ready to lose Szalai after signing him in January on a four-and-a-half-year deal for £2.6million [The Athletic], but a huge bid could force their hands.

Leicester City have also been credited with an interest in the 23-year-old, and more clubs could join and West Ham in the race should he catch the eyes in the coming weeks.

One to watch at the Euros

Hungary have been drawn alongside Portugal, Germany and France in Group F, and Szalai is set for his biggest ever tests as a centre-back.

He will be coming up against the likes of Crisitano Ronaldo, Diogo Jota, Bruno Fernandes, Karim Benzema, Kylian
Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann and Thomas Muller at the competition, and West Ham scouts will surely be keeping an eye on every of the group games.

His performances will go a long way in informing their final decisions, and we will also be watching Szalai with keen interest.

Fenerbahce currently value him at around £20million [The Athletic], and they will be hoping he justifies that fee in the coming weeks.

We should not hesitate to stump up the cash should he come out on top of his battles with some of the finest attackers on the planet, but we should expect fierce competition for his signature if that happens.

The 6ft 4in centre-back can also play as a left-back and in a four-man or three-man defence, while he offers a threat in front of goal, ending last season with three goals in 21 league games.

West Ham need at least one more centre-back this summer with Fabian Balbuena gone, and could Szalai be that man?
