West Ham to beat Tottenham to new midfielder signing amid Soucek exit news

West Ham United are looking to strengthen their midfield in the summer transfer window as Graham Potter hopes to avoid another season of disappointment.

The Hammers are languishing in 16th place on 34 points and are far from their ideal mid-table aspirations. Despite spending over £150 million in the summer transfer window, West Ham have struggled in the league.

One of the biggest reasons for West Ham’s woes is their ineffective, slow and unimaginative midfield.

Potter is now ready to make amends to the mistakes made last summer and has set strengthening his midfield as his priority in the summer.

West Ham ahead of Tottenham in midfielder chase

The Irons are lining up a move for Sunderland gem Chris Rigg, as per The Guardian. The 17-year-old is one of the most exciting midfielders in the Championship and has been linked with a move away from the club.

Tottenham are also keen to sign Rigg but West Ham have positioned themselves in a strong position to advance their interest and beat their London rivals to signing the Stadium of Light ace.

Potter has held internal talks about signing the teenager as the Irons aim to add dynamism to the midfield.

Rigg signed a three-year deal at Sunderland last summer which puts the Black Cats in a strong position to negotiate. If Sunderland’s push for Premier League promotion is successful, signing Rigg could become an expensive affair.

The 17-year-old has scored four goals and assisted one in 34 Championship appearances and has been one of the most consistent performers for the Black Cats this season.

Tomas Soucek worry

The report further adds that midfielder Tomas Soucek could leave the London stadium as the Hammers could receive offers for the Czechia international.

Soucek has been at the since 2020, becoming a reliable midfielder for the club but given West Ham’s woes in the middle of the park, a change is long overdue.

If a considerable offer comes in for Soucek, West Ham must accept it and cash in on the 30-year-old midfielder. Apart from Soucek, the Irons must also offload Guido Rodriguez, who has barely played under Potter.

With a midfield revamp need of the hour, West Ham must cash in on players like Soucek and bring in fresh faces like Rigg.
