Former West Ham United striker Sebastien Haller has become the first player in history to score five goals in his first two Champions League appearances.

The Ivory Coast international, 27, scored once as Ajax beat Besiktas 2-0 on Tuesday, adding to the four goals he grabbed in their 5-1 demolition of Sporting on matchday one.

In doing so, the Hammers flop eclipsed the record set by the likes of Marco van Basten, Diego Simeone, Didier Drogba and Erling Haaland – who all scored four goals in their first two appearances in the competition.

We asked our esteemed panel of West Ham Super Fans over on Facebook what they think went wrong with Haller at the London Stadium following his goalscoring heroics in the Champions League.

Here is what they had to say.

Huge miss?

Haller has 10 goals and two assists across all competitions so far in 2021-22 after ending last term with 13 goals and five assists.

While things did not work at West Ham, he is proving at Ajax that he is a quality finisher despite his Premier League struggles.

He has not only taken the Eredivisie by storm, but he’s also doing incredibly well on the biggest stage when it comes to club football.

The Dutch giants are playing to his strengths, and while the Hammers do not regret letting him go, selling him at a loss remains a blow.

Haller was sold for £25million in January having cost £45million when he joined from Eintracht Frankfurt [The Athletic].

He scored just 14 goals in 54 games for the Hammers during 19 months at the club, but he has already surpassed that tally in a few months and is on his way to establishing himself as a hero.

Haller is apparently not a bad player, and while he will go down in history as a West Ham flop, maybe things would have turned out differently if they had played to his strengths.
