West Ham set to miss out on Danny Ings

Danny Ings has just turned down a new contract with Southampton, and West Ham immediately registered their interest in signing him, but, according to The Athletic, he is aiming higher up the table.

They report that the 28-year-old has “his heart set on the top table”, which suggests that the Hammers will not be signing Ings this summer.

Even Tottenham Hotspur – who have had more regular top-six finishes than the Hammers over the last 20 years or so – don’t look like they will be signing Ings. It feels as if the former Burnley man is very much limiting where he ends up with this stance.

Would West Ham be missing out?

To put it simply, yes, they would be missing out if Ings only has eyes set on a move to the likes of Liverpool or Manchester City.

The former Reds striker has a better than one in three Premier League goal record and, at 28, is at the peak of his career.

He would almost certainly improve this West Ham team as in the 2020/21 season; he scored 12 league goals, which would have made him the Hammers’ top goalscorer [WhoScored].

The season before, he was even better as he smashed in 22 goals for the Saints, so he is a striker with a definite eye for goal and could be just the signing West Ham need to push on.

However, as it stands, he seems to have turned down a move to the Hammers and has his eyes on the teams higher up the league, but do the likes of Liverpool and City really need Ings?

We would say they don’t, and instead, he should be willing to make the move to the London Stadium; it is a transfer that makes total sense for all parties.
