According to the Evening Standard, the fact that the Chile international flew out to South America last week to compete for his country has complicated the chances of getting the transfer over the line in January.
The Hammers are looking to sign a striker this month and have identified the 20-goal ace as a suitable candidate.

West Ham must not let something as trivial as an international break stop them from pursuing the target that they want.
Diaz, 22, has proven that he’s ready for the step up in his career and he could realise his ambitions at the London Stadium.
David Moyes will have been looking for strikers ever since Sebastien Haller was sold and despite countless links, none have come through the door.
While it has not been a problem as Michail Antonio has stepped up to the task, a long-term solution is definitely needed.
Given the fact that he is in his early 20s, he will certainly be the club’s go to attacker for the entirety of this decade.
Blackburn will certainly be unwilling to let go of his services, but every player has a price and West Ham must test this resolve with an opening offer.
