West Ham monitoring Bordeaux striker Hwang Ui-jo – report

West Ham United are closely following the situation regarding the future of Hwang Ui-jo at French club Bordeaux, according to Calciomercato.

David Moyes is keen on freshening up his attacking options as he looks to find strikers to complement Jarrod Bowen next season.

It is believed that the London-based club have identified the South Korean international as one of the targets to fill that role ahead of the next campaign but they are facing competition from a number of clubs including Nantes, Marseille and Schalke.

What makes Ui-jo a more realistic target for the Irons is the fact that Bordeaux have been relegated to the third tier whereas the striker is now entering the final year of his contract with the club.

Clinical Striker

Hwang was one of the few bright sparks of a disappointing Bordeaux season. In 32 games, he scored 11 goals and provided two assists in the recently concluded Ligue 1 season [Transfermarkt].

The Korean international contributed to 25% of the goals for the French club in the 2021-22 Ligue 1 season.

Now, the big question mark is how Moyes integrates him into the team. Surely, he cannot come to a new league and start firing in the goals. Therefore, he has to be rotated between Antonio and him for next season.

However, it is better if Moyes gets this striker position sorted because he cannot rely on the Jamaica international in the entire season, as we saw in the crunch games last season.

Therefore, signing someone like Hwang means that the South Korea international will get a lot of game time in cup competitions such as Europa Conference League and League Cup.

In other West Ham news, the club have “nothing to add” when asked about the proposed Birmingham City takeover that may involve David Sullivan.
