West Ham may suffer multi-million financial blow after major sponsor development

West Ham would be affected should the government follow up on their plans to ban betting firms from sponsoring football shirts, claim Claret and Hugh.

According to the report, the Hammers and Betway extended their partnership for a further six years in 2019 in a deal that is believed to be worth around £10million per season.

However, according to a report in The Daily Mail, they may not be allowed to have them on their jersey, as outlawing front-of-shirt logos of gambling companies is very likely to be one of the proposals put forward by the government this winter.

There could also be restrictions on pitchside hoardings and TV commercials, but that is understood to be less likely as things stand.

Huge blow

A club like West Ham is not always the most stable financially and can rely a good deal on its sponsors.

Given the way the game is progressing, a lot of gambling companies are investing in sport, not just football, and offer fantastic revenues to clubs.

It remains to see what comes of this decision as it will not just affect the Hammers, but clubs all over the pyramid.

It may lead to some clubs facing financial issues, so whatever the ultimate decision is, it must be taken after careful considerations.

One good thing is that the changes surrounding all of it is will not take place immediately.

The white paper will come out later this year or in early 2022 after which the changes will be discussed and debated and then passed.

It’s unlikely to have any effect on clubs until 2023 at the very earliest.
