West Ham manager confirms Angelo Ogbonna and Manuel Lanzini are doubts for the Newcastle game

West Ham manager David Moyes has confirmed that the Hammers could be without Angelo Ogbonna and Manuel Lanzini for their game against Newcastle United.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the 58-year-old confirmed that Ogbonna has a “hamstring injury” but is back in training. He then confirmed that Lanzini has a “groin problem” but that he was also training.

So, it appears as if Moyes has two major injury doubts for the season opener but other than that, barring a few “knocks and niggles”, he has a fully fit squad to choose from.

Will West Ham miss Ogbonna and Lanzini?

West Ham lost twice to Newcastle last season, so they will be looking for some form of revenge. However, their cause will not be helped if they are missing Ogbonna.

The 33-year-old has a huge amount of experience and is arguably the Hammers’ best centre-back.

The pair of Craig Dawson and Issa Diop had a nightmare at St James’ Park last time as Dawson was sent off, and Diop scored an own goal.

So, you would have to hope that Ogbonna returns to shore up the defence.

Lanzini missing the game would be less of a blow as the Hammers have the likes of Jarrod Bowen, Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals available, so we don’t think they would necessarily struggle without the Argentine.

After all, he only made 17 appearances in the league last season.

So, the worst piece of news from Moyes’ press conference was most certainly the injury to Ogbonna.
