West Ham make Graham Potter offer, decide to sack Lopetegui

Graham Potter has been offered the head coach role at West Ham United until the end of the season, according to The Times.

The newspaper reported via their website on 6 January that the Irons have decided to sack Julen Lopetegui and want Potter to lead them until the end of the season.

Lopetegui is not expected to be in charge of the Hammers for their home game against Fulham next Tuesday (14 January), and he may also not be in the dugout for Friday’s FA Cup clash with Aston Villa (10 January).

Graham Potter to replace Julen Lopetegui at West Ham

David Sullivan has been reluctant to sack Lopetegui after only appointing him in the summer.

However, the 4-1 loss against Manchester City on Saturday (4 January) appears to have been the final nail in the coffin for the Spanish tactician.

The Hammers hoped Lopetegui would take them to greater heights when they named him as David Moyes’ successor ahead of the season and even let him spend over £100million on new signings.

West Ham, though, find themselves sitting 14th in the Premier League after 20 games, with only seven points separating them from the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, the East London outfit have disregarded reservations about Potter, who was earlier pictured with Tim Steidten, and offered him their head coach role.

The contract on the table is a short-term one and it remains to be seen if there is scope for it to be extended if all parties are satisfied.

Potter, who has only won one trophy in his managerial career, has been without a job since being sacked as the Chelsea manager in April 2023.
