West Ham January transfer stance emerges amid ‘Complicated’ Lopetegui decision

West Ham will need to sell before they can look to sign new players in the January transfer window, according to Jason Burt.

Writing in The Telegraph (30 December), Burt revealed that the Hammers will need to offload players next month before they can look to bring reinforcements in to help turn their fortunes around this season.

The window comes at an awkward time for the Hammers with the pressure on Julen Lopetegui mounting after a 5-0 loss against Liverpool, although the boss is set to be given more time.

Burt shared the club’s stance as he wrote: “Lopetegui’s future is complicated by the looming January transfer window.

“Last week he revealed he was in talks with co-owner David Sullivan about potential signings although it is understood West Ham need to sell before they can buy.”

West Ham have to get it right in the January transfer window

With Lopetegui seemingly safe in his job, the January transfer window could make or break his own future at the club as he looks to improve things on a consistent basis.

However, it seems like it could be a job within itself as players need to be offloaded before new faces can be brought in. The likes of Mohammed Kudus have been linked with a move away this term [Sacha Tavolieri] but the Hammers will have to be careful and make sure they are able to replace their quality players.

The Irons have underwhelmed massively this season but do own a nine-point buffer to the bottom three, so it remains to be seen how much extra investment will be made on a coach whose long-term future remains shrouded in doubt.

Sullivan seems to have made the decision to stand by his summer appointment but Lopetegui will have to work with the owner to make sure the January transfer brings the Hammers what they need.

In other West Ham news, the decision to stick by Lopetegui could be costly after an update from Fabrizio Romano.
