West Ham intend to expand the capacity of the London Stadium this season
West Ham are planning to expand the capacity of the London Stadium from 60,000 to 62,500 with planning permission submitted, according to minutes just released from June’s Stadium Safety Advisory Group meeting.
The Hammers initially wanted to expand the stadium a while ago, but they called it off due to the pandemic [West Ham’s official website]. However, it appears as if they have finally applied to expand the capacity of the London Stadium and make it the second-biggest stadium in the Premier League.
This meeting was held in June, but the minutes were only just published, so this is new information, and it confirms in black and white that the Hammers finally want to expand the capacity of their ground.

Is this good news?
Given that West Ham have a Europa League campaign to compete in this season, it is hard to see why this isn’t a good idea by the Hammers.
Though it is only a slight increase, you would think that given how well David Moyes’ side did last season, fans would be flocking to the London Stadium to watch their side in the flesh.
Therefore, this stadium expansion makes perfect sense from a financial point of view and also is just a good way of allowing more fans into the ground to watch West Ham play.

However, nothing has been confirmed yet, so the club’s application could be rejected.
This would be a shame if the club aren’t allowed to expand the stadium, but there is still well over a month until the Hammers’ first Premier League game at home, so there is plenty of time for the planning permission to be sorted.
We think this is a great idea from West Ham and will be watching on with interest to see what happens next.
