West Ham have almost no chance of signing Darwin Nunez

West Ham have almost “no chance” of signing Darwin Nunez from Benfica, according to Jacob Steinberg of The Guardian.

According to reports from Sky Sports, West Ham are pushing for a deal for Nunez, where a fee is believed to have been agreed between the two clubs.

The 22-year-old Uruguay international has scored 20 goals in all competitions this season.

Steinberg has suggested that Nunez could possibly think that he can move to a bigger club, and it would take a ridiculous fee to sign him.

The journalist wrote on Twitter: “West Ham’s latest was a move for Darwin Nunez, but it sounds like there’s almost no chance Benfica sell the striker now. Would probably take a ridiculous fee. Starting to feel a bit unrealistic.”

He followed up with another tweet: “Nunez is (the) top scorer in Portugal and has done well in Champions League this season. Why would Benfica sell at (the) last minute unless they really need the cash? And Nunez thinks he can get a move to a bigger club. Could be a late change today, but I doubt it.”

Looks difficult

West Ham desperately need to sign a striker this month but the reported move for Nunez has come too late in the window.

He has a massive £100m buy-out clause [Claret and Hugh] in his contract that runs till 2025.

Unless Benfica get a high transfer fee for him, chances are highly unlikely that he won’t be sold this month.

He is currently in South America and in terms of logistics, it looks really difficult to get his signing done before Monday’s 11 pm deadline.

West Ham

Nunez would be a brilliant signing for the club. He has done well in the Champions League this season and would add significant depth and quality to the squad.

It remains to be seen if the Hammers check out some other options like Divock Origi from Liverpool who could be available in the market today.

It has been an uninspiring transfer window for the Hammers, with the club failing to land a single player this month.
