West Ham failed to include goals add-on clause in Sebastien Haller’s Ajax deal

West Ham will not benefit from the form of Sebastien Haller after failing to include any goal-related clauses in his Ajax deal, according to David Ornstein.

The Athletic journalist reports that while including goals add-on clause in big-money transfers is a common theme, the Hammers did not think about one, potentially missing out on bonuses given his recent heroics in the final third.

The Ivory Coast international striker, 27, left the London Stadium in January for the Netherlands in a £25million deal, and has 22 goals across all competitions to his name since then.

Missed chance?

A selling club would receive a bonus if a transferred player scores a certain number of goals, and after 22, the Hammers would have been close to earning some money had they included the clause in Haller’s deal.

The former Eintracht Frankfurt star scored just 14 goals in the 54 appearances he made for West Ham during the 19 months he spent there, and it appears the club were not confident that he was going to come good at Ajax.

He cost them £45million and they should have thought about including some clauses in his deal after parting ways with him for almost half of what they bought him for.

West Ham will surely agree they made a mistake making Haller their club-record signing, but failure to look for ways to make more money from the deal that took him to the Eredivisie further highlights some of their shortcomings at board level.

The Frenchman bagged 13 goals last term and has five goals in as many league games this term, with four goals to his name in one Champions League appearance so far.
