West Ham United: Don Hutchison slams disallowed goal v Wolves – ‘The refs have had shockers’
Don Hutchison has slammed Premier League officials after West Ham defender Emerson’s disallowed goal against Wolves.
The Italian left-back – who conceded and won a penalty in the Hammers’ 2-1 win at Molineux – headed in when his side were 1-0 down, only to have the goal chalked off by VAR.
Newcastle United also saw a strike ruled out by VAR in their 1-0 win over Fulham for a foul, while the video assistant was involved in awarding the spot-kick from which Arsenal opened the scoring in their 3-0 win over Brighton – all decisions that drew the ire of Hutchison.
He posted on his personal X account: “[Oh my] days. The refs have had shockers today.
“Goal chalked off for West Ham. Goal chalked off for Newcastle. Now that in the Arsenal game.”
West Ham overcome adversity against Wolves
When Emerson nodded home early in the second half, both he and David Moyes were visibly frustrated by the decision that went against them.
The Hammers had been poor in the first half and were just growing into the game after the break – but that setback had the potential to derail their resurgence.
However, West Ham stuck to their task and were rewarded with a penalty of their own, which Lucas Paqueta converted to level the scores.
James Ward-Prowse then found the net directly from a corner to earn a morale-boosting victory.
It was an impressive show of resilience from Moyes’ men, who must surely still be reeling from the events of their 4-3 defeat against Newcastle where they allowed a 3-1 lead to slip.
The result also boosts their bid for European qualification – they remain seventh on 48 points but have played more games than Manchester United ahead of them and Newcastle behind.
