West Ham defender Issa Diop could miss several games due to AFCON

West Ham defender Issa Diop could be ruled out of several games if he competes in the 2022 African Cup of Nations, per Claret and Hugh.

The Hammers centre-back has not been capped internationally but is eligible to play for France, Senegal and Morocco.

Should he pick either Senegal or Morocco and is called up for the tournament that begins on January 9, he will miss a number of games for the Hammers.

Big blow

If Diop makes his decision and is called up for the tournament, it will be a huge blow for the London club.

David Moyes is already without Angelo Ogbonna’s services for the rest of the season and losing Diop would mean that he has only two first choice centre-backs.

There will certainly be discussions before the 24-year-old makes an official decision, but the Hammers have to prepare for the worst-case scenario.

Diop, who recently hit a milestone and was labelled “fantastic” by David Gold, will be a huge miss if he’s unavailable.

Should they be without his services for a month or two, it’s important that they sign another centre-back in January.

The rest of the pitch seems pretty well stacked, but it is necessary that a defender walks through the door.

Thus far, they have been fortunate in terms of injuries, with Ogbonna being the only major one, but players do tend to pick up plenty of knocks in and around the festive period when the games are thick and fast.
