David Moyes comments on West Ham debutant Sonny Perkins

West Ham boss David Moyes has revealed that youngster Sonny Perkins was “really disappointed” after the game against Rapid Vienna in the Europa League clash on Thursday.

The 17-year-old nearly scored on his debut after he came on off the bench in the 2-0 win against Vienna.

Vladimir Coufal played in a perfect cross for Parkins from the right. He did well to leap and get a header on target. Although it was a brilliant stop by the goalkeeper, the youngster felt it was a missed golden opportunity.

Moyes said, as quoted by Football London: “Well, I’ve got to say I’ve given quite a few 17-year-olds and a few 16-year-olds debut too so I think it’s always pleasing when you give a young boy a chance.

“He’s really disappointed he didn’t score the header but he’s deserved it as did Dan Chester’s there were a couple of others on the bench as well. They are beginning to knock on the door.

“I want to be able to use them and if they perform and they run around the way that they do, and he does well he will give himself every chance of getting another game.”

Nearly dream debut

Moyes has handed debuts to many young players in his managerial career. He is never afraid to give chances to young talents if they are good enough.

With the Hammers already leading 2-0, it was the perfect time to throw in the youngster.

It was a great experience for him but he is naturally disappointed as the debut could have been even better.

West Ham

According to reports from Football London, when the cross came in, the West Ham bench and coaches were half out of their seats as they had anticipated that he would score.

Perkins is a bright young talent and goals will no doubt come for him in the future.

West Ham had already secured a passage to the knock-out rounds, but with this result, they have now topped the group as well, with a game to spare.

It will be interesting to see if Perkins will be given another chance in West Ham’s final Europa League group game.

Moyes will be encouraged by what he saw from the youngster, and hopefully, he could make further cameo appearances here and there this season.
