West Ham consider new deal for Michail Antonio after road traffic accident
West Ham United are considering Michail Antonio’s contract beyond this season after he was involved in a road traffic accident, according to The Times.
The newspaper reported via their website on Monday [9 December] that the Irons will continue paying the 34-year-old’s wages, which amounts to over £90,000-a-week, until his deal expires in June as they do not have insurance to cover the situation as he recovers from a road traffic accident on Saturday, 7 December.
Although the Hammers have since shared that the striker is in “stable condition” and has undergone surgery on a lower limb fracture, he will not know if he will be able to play football again for at least 12 months, according to Jim White [talkSPORT].
West Ham will, nevertheless, hold talks with Antonio over extending his contract when he leaves his hospital.
West Ham hoping for speedy recovery for Michail Antonio
The news of the road traffic accident came as a shock to not only everyone associated with West Ham but also to the whole football world.
There is no doubt that everyone was relieved to hear that the Jamaica international is stable, with Gary Lineker sending him best wishes on BBC Match of the Day on 7 December.
It was also heartwarming to see the Irons dedicate their 2-1 victory over Wolves at the London Stadium on Monday [9 December] to their teammate.
The players walked onto the pitch for warm-up before the game wearing “Antonio 9” shirts, while Tomas Soucek held up nine fingers after netting the opener.

He later revealed that the whole team had a video call with Antonio before the game, smiling at his teammates and wishing them the best.
Antonio has been a key player for the East London outfit for the last nine years and the least they can do for him in this unfortunate instance is offer him a contract extension.
In other West Ham news, the Irons are keeping tabs on this new Premier League sensation ahead of the January transfer window.
