West Ham ‘can beat anyone’ as John Moncur issues rallying Europa League call

Tonight is the big night for West Ham United as they host Sevilla in the second leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie, looking to overturn a 1-0 deficit.

Los Rojiblancos hold that slender one-goal advantage as they come to the London Stadium courtesy of Munir’s goal in the reverse fixture one week ago but the Irons are still well in the game.

Their home leg offers a superb chance to overhaul the lead Sevilla currently have and a packed out London Stadium will go a long way to carrying the Hammers over the line.

Former West Ham midfielder John Moncur is very bullish over their chances tonight claiming that David Moyes’ side can beat anyone on their day.

“West Ham are more than capable of overturning the deficit,” Moncur told The Athletic. “This team can beat anyone on their day.

“We have enough going forward to get at Sevilla. The atmosphere at the London Stadium will be electric. I don’t care how experienced they are, Sevilla won’t know what’s hit them.”

No pressure

Regardless of what some people might say about tonight’s clash, the pressure is not on West Ham to win the game.

It’s actually all piled upon the six-time winners of the competition not to throw their lead away and that is far more pressure-inducing than having to go out and win the game.

Moyes has to remind his players of this fact and that should hopefully relax the whole team to play their natural game.

If they do that, then the La Liga side will surely struggle to contain the Irons and even if a few chances are missed, one will eventually find its way over the line.

All the Hammers need to do is remain in the tie in the first 20 or so minutes because they can very easily find themselves with no chance if they go too gung-ho from the off and get countered time and time again.

In other West Ham news, Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui has earmarked a number of Irons players as “extraordinary” ahead of tonight’s showdown.
