West Ham boss Moyes admits blocking Aston Villa move for Randolph – report

West Ham boss David Moyes has admitted that he has blocked a loan move for Darren Randolph in January.

The Ireland international was on Steven Gerrard’s radar with Aston Villa interested in signing the 34-year-old in January.

Despite having four senior keepers on their books, Moyes thought a loan move would be counterproductive for the Hammers.

“I have no intention of letting Darren go, we have had no offer,” The Scot told Football.London.

“So as far as I’m concerned, all we received was a loan. I can’t see why I would ever let Darren Randolph go on loan.”

Better to be safe than sorry

Randolph is a trusted goalkeeper and has done brilliantly for West Ham throughout the years which is why Moyes would have wanted to keep him around.

The blocking of the move does seem a little unfair with the Hammers having more than enough back up to fill the position.

Lukasz Fabianski has the number one spot firmly covered with Alphonse Areola, a great back up option when called upon. He has displayed great performances in the Europa League and domestic cups when called upon.

The Hammers also have David Martin on their books which makes Moyes blocking a move for Randolph a little more strange.

Coming to the end of his career, aged 34, Randolph will simply just want to be playing football.

He is yet to make an appearance for West Ham this season, but a loan deal might not have guaranteed him first team football with Emi Martinez having firm grip on Villa’s number one spot.

If Randolph wants to finish his career with a flurry on regular football, he may have to consider moving down a level.
