West Ham boss David Moyes slams Premier League after Leeds defeat

David Moyes was very critical of the Premier League regarding fixture congestion after defeat for West Ham on Sunday (January 16).

The Hammers were subject to a 3-2 defeat at the London Stadium against Leeds United after coming out as winners when the two sides met in the FA Cup last week.

Jarrod Bowen could have stolen a point for the Irons in the 94th minute but fired his chance over with his chest from less than six yards out.

Moyes said on Match of the Day 2: “Playing Leeds twice is really difficult but also then when you squeeze in another Premier League game in midweek when I don’t think it was needed.

“We have had none at West Ham here cancelled through Covid we have had a game because Norwich pulled out of it, so we fulfilled the fixture but the Premier League at the moment aren’t getting it right.”

Bitter sweet

It was a great game despite losing. The football on display at the London Stadium was terrific as both sides battled to win.

West Ham

West Ham could have easily walked away with something, but it was probably a fair result that they didn’t. The Irons didn’t necessarily do enough to win the game but Bowen’s miss from a few yards out was terrible, but the form he is in for the Hammers, it can be forgiven.

It’s hard not to be tough on the team who are exceeding all expectations whilst sitting fourth in the Premier League. However, that defeat does allow Arsenal to overtake the Irons if they win their next match.

Moyes must find a way of winning those games if the team wants to be playing the highest level of European football next season.

Moyes is right though, only Chelsea and Man City have levelled the Hammers 22 games played in the league.

Understandably fixtures need to be kept up with but was it absolutely essential the team played Norwich midweek? That was probably the decisive factor with the team looking tired at times.
