West Ham board torn to pieces after what Graham Potter said – ‘Minuscule Class’
West Ham United’s board have been accused of acting with “minuscule class” by Andy Dunn despite Graham Potter’s assertion the Hammers are a “massive club”.
Potter was hired as the Irons’ new head coach on a contract until the summer of 2026 on Thursday (official website, 9 January) and Julen Lopetegui was sacked.
While news of Lopetegui’s sacking was not unexpected, the circumstances were bizarre with the Spaniard still taking training on the day he was sacked.
As such, Daily Mirror journalist Dunn – writing in the paper’s print edition (10 January, page 53) – took aim at how the Hammers’ hierarchy dealt with the situation.
“On being made head coach of West Ham United, Graham Potter said ‘When you have had time to think, there’s a feeling. The board’s ambition, the squad, the academy, the supporters. When you add it all up, it’s a massive club.’
“Perhaps. But a massive club that behaved with minuscule class in the way it managed Potter’s appointment.”
West Ham board make a hash of Graham Potter appointment
When the decision was taken to replace David Moyes last season, there were no major complaints from supporters.
Yes, there was a split between those desperate for the Scot to be replaced and those who felt that the club were on a solid footing under the experienced boss, but it felt like the right time to draw a line in the sand.
Where there was unity, though, was that Lopetegui was the wrong appointment. Somehow, the Spaniard managed to cling on a few months longer than most felt he should have.

But it was pretty unsavoury how he ended up getting the boot. Fair enough make the change, but make it with dignity. It was just completely the wrong way to go about it and actually took the shine off Potter’s appointment a little.
The former Chelsea boss now needs to hit the ground running to get everyone back singing from the sam hymn sheet.
