West Ham ace Tomas Soucek had stitches after nasty blow v Southampton
David Moyes has revealed that West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek required stitches after a nasty blow to the head against Southampton.
Early in the second half, Saints midfielder Ibrahima Diallo appeared to elbow the Czech international which left blood pouring from his head on the pitch at St. Mary’s.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side went on to win 3-1 and advance to the next round of the FA Cup after goals from Romain Perraud, James Ward-Prowse and Armando Borja cancelled out Michail Antonio’s tap-in for the Irons.
Evening Standard journalist Jack Rosser shared what Moyes had said about Soucek via his personal Twitter account, confirming stitches had been required.
Whether he is fit to play Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday is still unknown but he did seem in good spirits on the Hammers’ bench after the incident.
Should’ve been red
Andre Marriner bottled sending Diallo off in this incident and not many could argue against it.
It was a surprise to see that VAR didn’t intervene at all as the big Czech was left on the floor as the West Ham medical staff tried to stop the outpouring of blood.

In the interest of fairness, Ben Johnson could have been punished for what appeared to be a hand in the face of a Saints attacker too but the replays suggested he knew little about it.
The use of VAR in some FA Cup games and not others has already been questioned by some supporters on social media and it helped to rightly give the home side a penalty after Craig Dawson’s clumsy tackle on Broja.
That doesn’t excuse Marriner missing Diallo’s challenge and letting him get away scot-free given he ended his opponent’s day much earlier than it was due to.
