View: West Ham should not regress by signing Andy Carroll

West Ham should not act in desperation by signing Andy Carroll in their hunt for a striker in January.

The pair have been linked with former Hammer Carroll’s short-term contract at Reading expiring making him a free agent.

Speculations gathered pace when the 33-year-old was seen at West Ham’s training ground in Romford.

A short-term deal has been rumoured at the London Stadium as the Irons look to provide much-needed cover for Michail Antonio.

Worst case scenario

This is a bizarre link for West Ham and one that should be completely scrapped.

Many Irons think that Carroll could still do a job in claret and blue and could help the team with cameo appearances when the team are trying to salvage games in the last ten minutes or so.

This statement is true to some extent but rather extreme from romantic Hammers.

Why would the club want to move backwards after making such impressive progress over the last couple of seasons?

Just because David Moyes needs a backup striker doesn’t mean we have to call on previous rejects like Carroll and even 39-year-old Jermain Defoe previously mentioned.

The Irons are pushing for the Champions League places whereas Carroll has shown himself to be Championship standards of late.

Other than being big enough to make an impact from set-pieces, he doesn’t suit Moyes’ current system and would be a disaster as the team try to play a more attractive style of football.

As much as we need a replacement, the club would be better off not bringing in anyone rather than signing the wrong player. Moyes speaks frequently on not bringing in players for the sake of it which is what this would be.

He did well once upon a time at the club that should be the end of it.
