View: Darwin Nunez would be a fantastic signing for West Ham

West Ham are showing keen interest in signing Benfica striker Darwin Nunez in the January transfer window, according to reports from Portuguese media outlet, Record (printed edition 5 December, page 8).

The Hammers are apparently looking to sign a striker this January, with Michail Antonio remaining the only recognised senior centre-forward at the club.

While the Jamaican has been in good form this season, it is not ideal for the Hammers to entirely rely on his form and fitness, when they’re aiming for a top-four finish in the league.

Nunez would be a terrific signing for the club.

However, the Hammers could face strong competition to sign him, with the likes of Newcastle United and both the Manchester clubs vying for his signature. There is interest from other rich European clubs as well.

The Uruguayan international, who recently earned rave reviews from Luis Suarez in October [Manchester Evening News], has been in terrific form, managing 11 goals and two assists in 17 games for Benfica this season.

He is a player blessed with technical abilities and has a natural flair in his game. On top of that, he is physically strong, and seems ideally suited for the robust nature of the Premier League.

The only fly in the ointment here is his huge potential transfer fee that stands around £127million (150 million Euros).

His agent is reportedly holding talks with Benfica to get clarity over his future.

Benfica would be willing to sell him if the price is right.

The Portuguese clubs tend to insert a high release clause on their players’ contracts, but they could be lured at a reduced price.

Nunez would be a superb signing for the Hammers, but his asking price remains a big obstacle.

In other West Ham news, a Sky Sports journalist claims the Irons want to sign this ‘Powerful’ Swiss star.
