‘Very good’ Harry Maguire ‘wasted’ at Manchester United, should have made move to West Ham – Tony Gale

Harry Maguire should have made the move to West Ham United and he’s “wasted” if he does not play regular football, according to Tony Gale.

Speaking to talkSPORT reporter Ian Abrahams, the Hammers legend claimed that while a move to Stratford would have been preferable, Maguire must get back to playing, “even if it’s not West Ham”.

Gale praised the international as a “very good footballer” amid growing criticism of the former Manchester United captain’s form and selection for the England squad.

Speaking to Abrahams, Gale said: “I think he should’ve. Even if it’s not West Ham, he needs to play regular football.

“Harry Maguire is a very good footballer, a very good centre-back and he’s wasted if he’s not playing.

“The mocking of Maguire [after England v Scotland] was totally out of order.”

Wasted

Maguire may be regretting not taking the chance to make the move from Manchester to East London, but until at least January he will be a Manchester United player.

Fresh criticism was aimed at the former Leicester City man after his call-up and continued selection for the England squad by Gareth Southgate.

Coming on as a half-time substitute for Marc Guehi on the second half of England’s friendly against Scotland, the 30-year-old hammered in an unfortunate own goal, giving more ammunition to the anti-Maguire brigade.

Shoddy scriptwriters would consider this too unrealistic, but again and again, Maguire finds himself in the limelight for all the wrong reasons. He has become an easy target, and a move to the Hammers could have taken him away from the firing line.

Regular starts and good performances at the London Stadium would give Southgate justification to keep him in the squad, so a move potentially this January could suit all involved, but especially Maguire.

In other West Ham news, a new Hammers signing has made the official international team of the week.
