Trevor Sinclair: West Ham United need a new striker and major additions
West Ham United are yet to make any new outfield signings this summer and Trevor Sinclair believes major squad additions are needed.
The Hammers will be playing in the Europa League and will need a bigger squad to challenge across all competitions this season.
French goalkeeper Alphonse Areola is the only signing made so far, and West Ham clearly need to do better with a little over two weeks left in the transfer window.
“It’s great they have made the Europa League but the squad’s not strong enough,” Sinclair said on talkSPORT, as shared on their official Twitter account.
“We definitely need a striker, players in every position really just to pad the squad out, and you can buy average players really.
“It’s a fantastic starting line-up, probably in the forward areas, I think they have got few options, but when you start going into holding midfielders I think we’re starting to look at weaknesses in the strength and depth in the squad.”
Spot on!
A striker must be signed at all cost, but it seems we have to brace ourselves for the possibility of ending the transfer window without signing one.
Manager David Moyes had shelved the plans to land a number 9 in January in order to wait for the summer, but no progress has been made on that end with only some days left to go.
A quality striker would have boosted West Ham’s top-four chances towards the end of last season, and we are definitely most likely going to regret it if we do not sign one before the end of this month.
Michail Antonio cannot survive playing in four competitions and having just a few days of rest in between games.
He remains prone to injuries, and playing a makeshift striker would not do us any good should he become unavailable.
We are waiting to see what happens in the coming days, but the current signs are not looking good.
