Tony Cottee wants West Ham United to give David Moyes a new contract
Tony Cottee believes West Ham need to give David Moyes a new contract amid “uncertainty” around his future at the London Stadium.
Moyes was on the verge of the sack last season before guiding the Hammers to the Europa Conference League title, their first major honour in over 40 years.
The Scot is now in the final year of his contract at West Ham, but legendary striker and Sky Sports pundit Cottee told The West Ham Way (13 September) that he deserves a new contract because “he gets it” at the club.

“I’m really pleased for David Moyes,” stated Cottee. “He’s really respectful, and he gets it.
“With David Moyes I feel we are in safe hands. Yes, of course we can improve and be more attacking. The subs could be used more and show a bit more intent to win matches at times – but I do think he’s the right man.
“At the end of the day if he’s the one they want in charge then he needs a new deal, 1 year deal isn’t right in my opinion.
“It creates uncertainty and also not ideal when bringing players in on 4-5 year contracts, with the manager in his last year.”
Wait
Moyes has done a great job as manager of West Ham, but there is as big an argument to wait on giving him a new deal as there is to hand him a fresh contract.
Before winning the Europa Conference League last season we were on the verge of a relegation battle despite spending £185m that season and the football was rancid.

The season before that saw a horrible run of form in the second half of the season that was papered over by the fact we made the Europa League semi-final, and the fact the club were so close to sacking him certainly says a lot.
There is certainly no rush to hand him a new deal based off the start of the season, because we don’t know how things will pan out in the coming months.
But if the board are sure that he’s the man they want in charge it would make sense to get it done sooner rather than later, although the fact they haven’t done so suggests they’re not as sure as Cottee is.
In other West Ham news, a Champions League club are keen to sign this Hammers star in January on a pre-contract agreement.
