Tony Cottee reacts to West Ham ‘Capitulation’ after what he saw at Tottenham

Tony Cottee wasn’t pleased with what he saw from West Ham in their “capitulation” against Tottenham in the Premier League on Saturday [19 October].

Spurs hosted the Hammers, beating Julen Lopetegui’s team 4-1, despite Mohammed Kudus giving his team the lead before being sent off late on.

Cottee saw some promise from the Hammers in the first half, but the 59-year-old expressed his disappointment at the full-time result on talkSPORT [21 October, 8:54].

“First half was alright, Jeff, to be honest, going up, one all. And then just the capitulation in the second half,” he said to Jeff Stelling and Ally McCoist.

“I couldn’t see tactically what they were doing. They didn’t put them under pressure. And once the second goal went in, the body language from the players, it was like, ‘Oh no, here we go, we’re gonna concede three or four here’.

“In the end they were lucky, Son hit the post, it could’ve been five, it could’ve been a lot worse.”

West Ham weak under Julen Lopetegui

Lopetegui’s tenure has been marred by defensive frailties for West Ham, having conceded 15 goals so far in the Premier League.

In the summer transfer window, the Hammers bought Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Jean-Clair Todibo and Max Kilman and added quality to their backline.

However, the results on the pitch have failed to reflect that investment, and the Spanish manager needs to turn the tide before things get worse.

Against Tottenham, the East Londoners showed signs of immaturity and allowed Ange Postecoglou’s team to get the better of them with ease.

Lopetegui has failed to create an identity, and it now feels like the club made the wrong decision to let go of David Moyes after the end of his contract.

Hopefully, the former Wolves manager will be able to turn things around, with Manchester United next up and potentially his final game if things don’t change.
