Tony Cottee rages at West Ham board in new David Moyes sack verdict live on talkSPORT
West Ham United’s board should have made a decision on David Moyes’ long-term future at the London Stadium at the end of last season, according to Tony Cottee.
The Hammers boss, who is in the final months of his contract in East London, has come under increased pressure in recent weeks as a result of his side’s terrible form which has seen them winless in all competitions in 2024.
While Cottee isn’t convinced Moyes deserves to be sacked because of recent results, he has hit out at the Hammers’ board for creating uncertainty at the London Stadium by only offering Moyes a 12-month extension last season.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Monday (26 February, 9:43) he said: “I blame the board. All of this could have been done last summer, West Ham won the conference league as we know. At that point, David Moyes should have left, or been given a four-year contract.
“Get on with it, to have a manager with four months left on his contract, it’s not good to have any sort of uncertainty at a football club and that’s what we’ve got at the moment.”
Will West Ham sack David Moyes?
West Ham have offered Moyes a one-year extension, but the Hammers boss has said that he won’t make a decision on his future until the end of the season given the current situation at the London Stadium.
While that is a sensible call from the Scotsman, it has left the Irons in a questionable position as they are now not in a position where they can reasonably prepare for the future as they have no idea who will be in the dugout come the start of next season.
However, the West Ham board would have come under similar criticism had they handed Moyes a four-year extension last summer and were now faced with the prospect of sacking him only months after he signed on the dotted line.
Hopefully, results will improve and the tension at the London Stadium can ease ever so slightly, but fans are frustrated and it will take more than a couple of wins to change that feeling.
