Tony Cascarino: Jesse Lingard lack of celebration was not disrespectful

Tony Cascarino does not think Jesse Lingard was being disrespectful when he did not celebrate the winning goal against West Ham on Sunday.

After trying to sign the England international all summer, the Hammers gave up the pursuit and he ended up staying on at Manchester United.

He then came off the bench against West Ham to score an impressive goal that secured the three points for his side in front of the fans he built such an affinity with on loan last season.

West Ham

Michael Owen slammed him for his lack of celebration and said on PL Productions’ post-match show, “I can’t believe players don’t celebrate when they score a goal against their old club, he was only there two minutes

“If he didn’t want to score, if he’s not that happy don’t pull the trigger, pass the ball, if that’s the case.”

When asked about what he said on talkSPORT, Cascarino responded, “Jesse Lingard’s situation in Manchester United was very personal. He went out on loan because he was deemed not good enough.

“The West Ham fans were singing ‘He’s one of our own’, so he’s got a real affinity with the West Ham faithful because he deserved it by the way he played.

“That doesn’t mean he’s being disrespectful for Manchester United, for me. He knows his future is not at Manchester United. I think he’s shown a bit of respect to both.”

Absolutely

We cannot understand why people have been reading so much into this situation.

Certain players do not like to celebrate against their former sides, especially if they’ve achieved some success there.

West Ham

Despite not officially joining West Ham, he was the one who guided them into the top six and his performances put him in contention for an England spot at Euro 2020.

He’s now a regular feature in the Man United matchday squad and has scored his first of the season for them as well.

Whether or not his future lies at Old Trafford is another thing, altogether, but it cannot be denied that his days at the London Stadium elevated his status and he will forever be grateful for it.

Hopefully, he does not sign an extension and the Hammers are handed the opportunity to buy him permanently in January.
