Tomas Soucek named new Czech Republic captain
West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek has been named the captain of the Czech Republic.
Czech had an impressive Euro 2020 campaign where they performed beyond expectations to reach the quarter-finals.
They enjoyed an upset victory over the Netherlands in the Round of 16 after navigating a group that comprised of Euro 2020 semi-finalists England World Cup 2018 finalists Croatia.
Czech reporter Ondřej Zlamal, via his personal Twitter account, shared a quote of the head coach Jaroslav Silhavy from a recent press conference.
He said, “Tomas Soucek will be the new captain.”
Deserves it
Soucek was a mainstay in the midfield and proved to be a solid partner to both Alex Kral and Tomas Holes.
He was a leader on the pitch and one could see him communicating and organising the team with and without the ball. He continued to be a similar aerial threat as he’s been in the Premier League but wasn’t as effective in front of goal.
We expected to see more of Kral and Soucek playing together as the former has been linked with a move to the London Stadium previously.

However, Silhavy preferred to start Holes ahead of him which proved to be a masterstroke, especially in the Round of 16 when he played a part in both goals – scoring one and setting up another.
We’re excited to see what Soucek has in store for us next season and hopefully, we’ll have added another name in the middle of the park to increase our depth in that department.
The Czech international has not just wowed the Hammers faithful, but also the media, who have been waxing his lyrical all season.
Ray Houghton claimed that he should have been named the Player of the Year as well, referring to him as an ‘incredible’ player. [talkSPORT]
He certainly was our Player of the Season and we’re delighted to have a player like him.
