Theo Walcott hails James Ward-Prowse signing as ‘perfect’ for West Ham United
Theo Walcott has hailed new West Ham signing James Ward-Prowse, describing him as a perfect fit for manager David Moyes, and admitting his surprise that Liverpool didn’t make a move for him.
Walcott claimed that Ward-Prowse’s set-piece ability, combined with players like Kurt Zouma who are willing to attack the ball in the air, would be a key threat for the Hammers over the course of this season.
Moyes was widely reported [talkSPORT, 25 July] to be the one driving the deal, as he specifically wanted to bring the former Southampton captain to the London Stadium, and the move has already paid off.

Speaking live on Sky Sports after Arsenal’s victory over Manchester United, Walcott was asked about West Ham’s early season form, stating: “Do you know what, I think with signings like James Ward-Prowse, having someone like David Moyes who will just live of set-pieces,
“Having him in your team and someone like Kurt Zouma attacking those, they’re going to be some threat.”
Gary Neville then quizzed the former Arsenal man about whether he had expected Ward-Prowse to move to a top-six club, with Walcott admitting: “I was [surprised]. I was surprised that someone like Liverpool [didn’t go for him],
“Especially with the likes of Henderson moving on, he’s that sort of type. But it’s a perfect fit for David Moyes right now.”

A perfect start to his Hammers career
Ward-Prowse always looked like he would settle in well at West Ham. He fits the mould of a typical Moyes-style player – hard-working, driven, wicked set-piece delivery and a consistent performer, not to mention he’s a homegrown talent, which always provides an added bonus.
With one goal and three assists in just three games so far this season, the midfielder has had a perfect start to his career at the London Stadium, playing a key role in some big wins over both Brighton and Chelsea since his arrival.
Walcott is right to have heaped praise on him. He does fit Moyes’ team like a glove, and his ability from set-pieces has proved to be a vital component of the way the team set up, making the Hammers a serious threat to deal with.
He is complimented by the likes of Kurt Zouma, Nayef Aguerd and Michail Antonio, all of whom have benefited from his arrival, and the club will be hoping he can keep up these levels of performance as the season drags on.
In other West Ham news, a 21-year-old player has now left the club on loan.
