talkSPORT host shares West Ham United verdict after victory over Chelsea

Andy Jacobs claims Chelsea deserved to beat West Ham despite falling to defeat at the London Stadium on Sunday (20 August).

Speaking on the talkSPORT Hawksbee & Jacobs Show on 21 August, the radio host said the game hinged on “one of the worst penalties” he had ever seen as Enzo Fernandez missed from the spot in the Hammers’ 3-1 win.

He believes if the Blues midfielder had scored, it would’ve “changed the game entirely” and that the West London side would’ve claimed the three points.

“The game completely hinged on one of the worst penalties I’ve ever seen in my life,” said Jacobs. “If Chelsea had gone 2-1 up, it would’ve changed the game entirely because West Ham could carry on with their tactics at 1-1, which were basically to sit back, let Chelsea have the ball and hope that they don’t score.

“That penalty would’ve made West Ham have to come out and it may have ended 2-2, but I think it’s just as likely Chelsea would’ve gone on to win the game – they certainly deserved to win the game.”

Rubbish

There is no way that a team that is beaten by a two-goal margin can really deserve to win the game, no matter how well they may have played for large spells.

It’s true that Chelsea did play the better football throughout the 90 minutes, but the fact of the matter is, they were absolutely appalling defensively and were punished for that.

Although the Blues will be able take some heart from how dangerous they looked going forwards at times, it counts for very little when you lose against one of your rivals.

West Ham

On the flip side for West Ham, it’s great to come away with three points and what looks like a comprehensive victory when you’re not at your best – that’s what good sides do.

This is a result that we can now look to build upon as it takes us onto four points and ensures that it has been a solid start to the season despite a lot going on behind the scenes over the past few weeks.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers have made an approach to sign a Portuguese forward.
