West Ham United exodus already mooted under Julen Lopetegui

Tom Rennie has predicted a mass exodus at West Ham during the summer transfer window after it was reported that Julen Lopetegui has agreed terms to become the new manager.

According to Fabrizio Romano [6 May], the former Wolves boss has agreed terms with the Hammers to replace David Moyes as manager ahead of the 2024/25 season, though no contracts have been signed yet.

The Scot has been under immense pressure this season, mainly due to his defensive style of play and poor results, and it looks to be his last at the London Stadium.

Reacting to the news, talkSPORT broadcaster Rennie tweeted on Monday (6 May): “What a huge summer for Lopetegui. Areola, Kudus, Alvarez, Bowen & Emerson are the only players able to play what he’d want.

“Forget Paqueta, he’s not staying. That’s half a team to be brought in. There needs to be some serious money brought in from sales. Lots of players out.”

Julen Lopetegui set to replace David Moyes as West Ham United manager

While Moyes deserves a lot of respect for his achievements at the London Stadium, it feels like the right time to part ways with the manager before things turn uglier.

Some fans have already turned on the Europa Conference League winner, while it appears he has also fallen out with the club’s technical director, Tim Steidten.

His current selection of players has also not been much help, especially in defence with Kurt Zouma, Nayef Aguerf, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Ben Johnson and Aaron Cresswell all receiving their fair share of criticism.

The news surrounding Lopetegui has been greeted with a very mixed reaction. Though some are excited about his tremendous managerial record, others have taken drastic action by creating a petition against the appointment.

Understandably, the Hammers fans are cautious about who replaces Moyes as manager. The last time this happened, Manuel Pellegrini was sacked after just 18 months in the role, with the Scot returning to save the day.

Fans learned very quickly that the grass is not always greener on the other side, though the majority of the London Stadium faithful agree that someone needs to take over from Moyes.

That someone looks to be Lopetegui.

In other West Ham news, the club have been labelled “embarrassing” for the treatment of Moyes.
