Stuart Pearce shares verdict on West Ham United summer spending, ‘Quite Wisely’
Stuart Pearce believes West Ham United spent their transfer budget “quite wisely” in the summer despite their sluggish start to the season.
The Hammers find themselves 12th in the Premier League table, and although they hit four past newly promoted Ipswich on 5 October, they’re still just five points from the drop zone.
Julen Lopetegui brought several new players through the London Stadium doors in the summer in hopes of bolstering his ranks and Pearce believes he’s managed to do just that.
“I just think they’ve added to what David (Moyes) did by giving the new manager £150million to spend on players,” he said on talkSPORT (15 October).
“I think they’ve spent it quite wisely, I think at the start of the season their aspirations would have been European Football or in and around some of those European places.
“They’re used to that under David, you know, they’ve been in and around finishing ninth, sixth, seventh in the league so that should be their aspiration.
“I just think it’s took a little while to get going.”
West Ham United need to carry on their Premier League form
There’s no denying that the Hammers performed well below par at the start of the season.
While they’ve managed to get two Premier League wins since then, it still feels like there’s plenty more to come from Lopetegui’s men.
One of their marquee summer signings, Niclas Fullkrug, hasn’t been able to prove his worth due to the injury he sustained while on international duty.
The German was arguably one of the Hammers’ best moves in the window and was one of the main areas within their team that needed strengthening.

He’s set to return sometime in the near future and after the recent performances of Jarrod Bowen that have left Alan Shearer in awe, things may be starting to look up for the club.
Of course, it’s still too early to guarantee anything but as long as they manage to keep their performance levels up, things should start to go their way sooner rather than later.
The Hammers’ next Premier League game is a tough encounter with London rivals Tottenham and given their surrender last time out against Brighton it could be this fixture has come at the ideal time.
