Stuart Pearce has his say on West Ham United fans who want David Moyes gone

Stuart Pearce has warned West Ham United fans to “be careful what you wish for” amid calls for manager David Moyes to be replaced.

Pearce spent two spells as part of Moyes’ coaching team at West Ham, first in the 2017/18 campaign and again between 2020 and 2022.

And the former Hammers defender believes Moyes deserves more acclaim for his achievements at the club.

Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, Pearce said: “Listen, I’m slightly biased, I’ve worked on the inside with Dave, I see the hard work he puts in.

“This is their third European campaign, they’ve got a European trophy. I stood on the pitch, we trained on the pitch one day, and we looked up and over the [129] years history West Ham have got I think they had three trophies up on the awnings.

“And I said, ‘It would be brilliant if you could put one up there’ and he has, you know.

“So over the period West Ham have existed since being the Thames Ironworks back in [1895], they’ve only ever won four trophies by the way [sic] and David has been part of that.

“Three European campaigns, sixth and seventh in the league, they’re in the quarter-finals, as you say now.

“They’ve had a final and a trophy lift, they’ve had a semi-finals – it’s quite a halcyon period and sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for because this fella has put his life and soul into that football club.”

Should West Ham persist with David Moyes?

There have been plenty of calls from West Ham supporters for Moyes to be replaced, though there are still some who believe he has earned the right to stay on.

Pearce clearly falls into the latter category and, despite getting the number of trophies in West Ham’s history wrong, he is right to point to the significance of Moyes adding to that number last season, when the Hammers defeated Fiorentina in Prague to win the Europa Conference League.

The Scottish manager has certainly revived the Hammers’ fortunes since taking over for his second spell in charge in 2019, when he was tasked with keeping the club from slipping back into the Championship.

Since then, European football has been in steady supply, along with top-half Premier League finishes.

However, there is also validity to the argument that West Ham need a change.

Moyes’ men have mustered just four wins in 19 games across all competitions in 2024 – and two of those came in the Europa League, with just two wins in 13 Premier League outings.

That is a long spell of poor form and raises concerns about whether the club have begun to plateau.

If Pearce has his way, though, Moyes will be at West Ham a little while longer.
