Spanish newspaper reacts to Edson Alvarez display as West Ham United star plays in 2-0 Mexico win v Ghana

West Ham United star Edson Alvarez started and played 73 minutes as Mexico triumphed in a 2-0 win over Ghana on Sunday, 15 October.

Goals from PSV Eindhoven’s Hirving Lozano and Cruz Azul’s Uriel Antuna clinched a friendly victory for the South Americans against the Black Stars at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.

And Spanish newspaper Marca [15 October] were left stunned by Alvarez’s display as he continued his tremendous start to the campaign.

They wrote: “Edson Alvarez had a great game, confirming his status as the team’s leader on the field and continuing the great moment he is having with West Ham in the Premier League.”

Alvarez triumphs over Kudus

It was the battle of West Ham United’s biggest summer signings in Alvarez and Kudus in the US and the Mexican international came up trumps to devastating effect.

The former Ajax defensive midfielder has been mightily impressive at the London Stadium so far this campaign and that form continued on Saturday with a stellar showing, successfully completing 92% of his passes, winning five of his seven duels, and dribbled past zero times [SofaScore].

In fact, Alvarez contributed heavily to a poor display from his West Ham United teammate with Kudus nowhere to be seen throughout his time on the pitch, losing possession of the ball 18 times, successfully completing just 25% of his dribbles, recording zero key passes and touching the ball just 36 times.

The Ghanaian will certainly be delighted that Alvarez won’t be playing against him for a long while yet after that performance and result, but will now be on the same team again as they both gear up for the Premier League return.

However, whether they will make it in time for Sunday’s crucial clash (22 October) against Aston Villa at Villa Park is another matter entirely. David Moyes will be left red-faced if they aren’t available.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers have reportedly been told to pay just £2m more to land one of their summer targets in the January window.
