‘Sounds like sour grapes’ – Darren Bent tears into former West Ham man for comments

Former West Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini’s time at the club initially held so much promise, but it proved to be a big disappointment.

The Chilean came to the London Stadium with a phenomenal track record, but struggled massively to find consistency with the Hammers.

Recently, he commented on his sacking by the east London outfit, and appeared to blame his departure on the poor performances of his summer signing Roberto.

Those are remarks that have raised the ire of former England international Darren Bent.

“It is harsh. It sounds like sour grapes to me,” he told Football Insider. “We all know Roberto cost them goals and points but to say he was one of the main reasons is poor.

“I do not like that at all. If you are a manager you need to take responsibility. You need to look at tactical decisions, team selection and take it on his own shoulders.

“I do not see that. It is a combination of things that get a manager sacked, not just one. Very harsh on the player. It is wrong.”

Who’s in the right here, Pellegrini or Bent?

You’ve got to say Bent. Pellegrini was the manager, he was in charge of all sorts of decisions at the club, including signing Roberto.

He could have vetoed that if he really wanted to. Plus he could have kept some of the club’s outstanding young ‘keepers around to play rather than hand Roberto an opportunity.

As Bent says, it’s all sorts of things that lead towards a manager losing his job, not just the poor performances of one player.

Yes, Roberto was shocking, but Pellegrini equally so.
