Solskjaer: Jesse Lingard will be ready to face West Ham United
West Ham United host Manchester United on Sunday, with Jesse Lingard set to return to the London Stadium for the first time since his loan spell.
The England international attacker, 28, impressed during his stint with the Hammers in the latter half of last season, but he rejected the chance to rejoin them this summer.
The Red Devils started their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 loss to minnows Young Boys, with Lingard’s error allowing the Swiss outfit to bag a late winner.
The player was visibly devastated at full-time, but Man Utd manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists he will be ready for the West Ham trip.
“With Jesse, no footballer likes making mistakes but it’s obviously part and parcel of the game,” the Norwegian said post-game (via Evening Standard).
“We’ll learn from it, he’ll learn from it. We’re humans, every footballer makes mistakes.
“He’ll pick himself up and be ready to go on Sunday against West Ham.”
Lingard will be warmly welcome by the Hammers fans after the role he played in helping them secure a place in the Europa League group stages, but he will be keen to get down to business upon his return.
He has not started games as he would have loved to for the Old Trafford side, and he will be expected to start weekend’s game on the bench.
After his back pass proved costly on Tuesday night, Lingard will be looking to quickly put the disappointment behind him, and while he would hope to quickly bounce back with a stellar performance against David Moyes’ side, the hosts will be keen to keep him and his teammates at bay.
With just a few months left on his current deal, a West Ham return for the Red Devils ace cannot be ruled out in January or next summer when he is set to become a free agent.
Lingard would relish the chance to show the Hammers what they are missing, and a tough battle should be expected between both sides.
