Sky Sports reporter left puzzled by what Danny Ings did in West Ham United victory v Lincoln City

Russ Taylor was left puzzled by what Danny Ings did as West Ham secured a victory over Lincoln City on Wednesday (27 September).

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Special on Wednesday (08:30pm), the reporter said the 31-year-old had “all the goal to aim for” before he dragged his effort wide.

But despite the English forward’s glaring miss with the scoreline at 0-0, the Hammers earned their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a 1-0 win, courtesy of a second-half goal from Tomas Soucek.

West Ham

“West Ham broke, almost from their own goal kick, they moved the ball forward so quickly,” said Taylor. “(Pablo) Fornals feeds in Danny Ings, he chops inside, he’s got all the goal to aim for, (Lukas) Jensen comes out to spread himself and he drags it just wide.”

Not good enough

This was a big opportunity for Ings to get himself a goal and build up some much-needed confidence, but it was another game that passed him by.

The forward did nowhere near enough in the game to even suggest that he still has it in his locker to compete with Michail Antonio for a starting spot in the lineup.

He did well originally with his chance against Lincoln, turning quickly to sit down a defender before dragging an effort wide with the goal seemingly at his mercy.

West Ham

He just hasn’t got that spark that he showed for a number of years at other clubs before making the move to West Ham and he’s not doing anything to show why he deserves more chances.

With the lack of options up top, he will continue to get the odd minutes here and there, but David Moyes will be starting to learn that he can’t rely on him moving forward to operate as a reliable backup.

In other West Ham news, a celebrity fan has raged at what Moyes did in the defeat against Liverpool.
