Simon Jordan: David Gold and David Sullivan will bask in West Ham glory, could win competition

The West Ham owners will “bask in the reflective glory” of the defeat of Sevilla last night, but could win the trophy, says Simon Jordan.

The Hammers overcame the La Liga side in extra time last night (17 March) to win 2-1 on aggregate, and secure their place in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

The ex-Crystal Palace owner expects David Gold and David Sullivan, who he often mentions he is not a big fan of, will take the credit for the win which should instead go to manager David Moyes.

Speaking on talkSPORT this morning (10.10am) the pundit said: “You have to give credit where credit’s due, which is David Moyes’ team overcame a few obstacles but they got to where they needed to get to, so it doesn’t surprise me.

“It of course provides validation for Gold and Sullivan, who will bask in this reflective glory, because they’ve taken a lot of brick bats, and there’ll still be an element of West Ham fans that won’t have it.

“But you’ve got to suggest this is a very, very good result, and there is no reason, without getting ahead of ourselves and getting carried away with the sentiment, that this side cannot go on and win this tournament.”

Famous night

The excellent work that Moyes has done in the Premier League is the basis for where the club is right now.

But last night at the London Stadium was where the Irons really announced themselves back on the European stage.

A tight 1-0 defeat in Spain had left the tie ready to tip either way, but gave the players confidence that they could hold their own.

That Ukrainian star Andriy Yarmolenko was the man to score the decisive goal, after Tomas Soucek’s opener in normal time, gave the whole occasion a fairytale feel.

The ferocious protests towards the ownership that occurred on a regular basis as recently as two years ago feel a long way away.

But, as Jordan says, they are benefiting from an outstanding job done by the manager.

And as long as Moyes keeps working wonders with what he’s got then he will keep the fanbase of their back.

In other West Ham news, Spanish newspapers reacted to last night’s result.
