Sawyer and Cascarino wowed by ‘ridiculous’ thing they heard about Brentford v West Ham United

Natalie Sawyer and Tony Cascarino were wowed by what Brentford did against West Ham United on Saturday in a “ridiculous” feat.

Bryan Mbeumo scored after 38 minutes to ensure the Bees opened their accounts in the first minute of their last three Premier League games.

Rather remarkably, Thomas Frank’s side have not been able to win any of the trio of matches, as Tomas Soucek equalised in the second half for the Hammers on Saturday.

Sawyer and Cascarino, speaking on talkSPORT [29 September] cast their judgement on the feat from Brentford, though noted they have to improve later in games.

Sawyer commented: “I said after about 30 seconds that I couldn’t believe they’d not scored, and they went and scored – so, yeah, ridiculous. Thomas Frank has spoken about how they’ve practiced these fast starts. If you’re listening, Thomas, could you practice the rest of the game – holding onto leads would be nice?”

Cascarino responded: “You can practice it, but for it still to happen is extraordinary. That is an incredible coincidence that Brentford have managed to do that. The finishes have been brilliant as well.”

West Ham United respond to latest first-minute Brentford hit

After Brentford had managed first-minute strikes against both Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur in the past two weekends, West Ham became the latest victims.

Bryan Mbeumo – even more important to Frank’s side now Ivan Toney has departed and Yoane Wissa has got injured – has scored their last two in this instance, though the Hammers were able to forge a response.

Soucek’s equaliser after the break at least ensured Julen Lopetegui’s side had something to take back across London in what has been a shaky start to the campaign.

There will be plenty of clubs around Brentford this season who go to the Gtech Community Stadium and come away empty-handed, so it’s at least something Lopetegui can hang onto.

It was an unglamorous game of football – these fights are what the Irons need at times – and the Spaniard will at least hope the away point can help kickstart a better run of momentum as Lopetegui continues to figure out his strongest side.
