Sam Matterface shares verdict on Jose Mourinho to West Ham United – ‘he is the best for me…’

Sam Matterface believes West Ham United should not appoint Jose Mourinho if the club decides to part ways with Julen Lopetegui.

While the Spaniard is expected to remain in East London for the foreseeable future after the 0-0 draw against Everton on Saturday [9 November] speculation persists regarding who could be his potential successor should the Hammers wield the axe.

However, Matterface has shared his belief that Mourinho is one option not to be considered at the Irons as he revealed his stance on the potential move on the Premier League All Access podcast [11 November, 47:37].

He said: “No. Because he only ever wants – listen I love him, he is the best for me, he’s given Chelsea more success than any other manager.

“But nowadays he’s a different guy, he is there just for the clicks and likes.”

David Sullivan cannot make the same mistake at West Ham United

West Ham finds themselves in a precarious situation with Lopetegui, no more evidence is needed to show the appointment has been a resounding failure but David Sullivan remains unwilling to dig into his pockets for a “hefty payoff”.

While this was widely expected to be the case, the Hammers owner must be held accountable for his actions and act now before the situation in East London spirals out of control.

However, with the Irons only six points clear of the relegation zone heading into the international break, it is paramount that the next appointment, should there be one, is in line with the long-term vision.

How Lopetegui, a manager known for his pragmatic approach, was the desired candidate to lead a side whose supporters have been crying out for free-flowing attacking football, is beyond comprehension.

The Spaniard lacks a clear footballing identity in East London and has essentially lost the dressing room with several key stars not “fully on board” with his methods [talkSPORT] as there appears to be no way out for the boss.

It is time to admit defeat, use the international break as a much-needed respite, and hit the reset button.

Lopetegui is too far out of his depth at the London Stadium and the squad is too talented to be in the position they are in.

Therefore, West Ham supporters are in for a long and painful season if the Spaniard persists in his role and, with his departure feeling more an inevitability than a possibility, the longer he is at the helm the worse off the club will be.
