Sam Allardyce takes swipe at West Ham United fans, Kevin Nolan squirms

Sam Allardyce took a double swipe at West Ham United – including one at the fanbase – in a chat with a squirming Kevin Nolan.

The former Irons boss was discussing the appointment of Julen Lopetegui on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast [9 August, 24m 40s].

Lopetegui was brought in to replace David Moyes, whose time at the London Stadium came to an end at the conclusion of last season.

Moyes’ playing style was one of the key reasons behind certain sections of the fanbase turning against him.

However, in an apparent dig, Allardyce said: “The new coach is going to try and play… let’s call it what everyone else calls it – ‘the West Ham Way’.”

“I mean, it’s a nonsense, but there we go – people still talk about the ‘West Ham Way’.

When Nolan explained that many fans just wanted a change of scenery in the dugout, Allardyce then replied: “That’s what they’re like. That’s what they’re like.”

Sam Allardyce just does not get it

Allardyce still feels hard done by when it comes to his exit at West Ham, but he maybe needs to take a look at himself.

Or just take a look at David Moyes, for that matter. The Scotsman’s playing style was not always the best, but he departed London Stadium as a hero.

That is thanks to the fact he achieved something tangible during his time at the club in winning the Europa Conference League.

As for the ‘West Ham Way’ that Allardyce mentions, it is true that that has become a sort of catch-all term in recent times.

Ultimately, fans just want success. If Lopetegui is able to combine wins with a nice playing style, even better.

Nolan was visibly uncomfortable during his chat with Allardyce as he still holds West Ham very close to his heart.

The Hammers favourite tried to explain why United fans – not all of them, but most – wanted Moyes out, but Allardyce just wanted to take a dig.

Rather than focusing on the past, let’s instead look to the future and hope that Lopetegui can achieve something similar to the man he is replacing.
